Direct and Indirect Questions – “Wo ist…?” vs “Ich weiß nicht, wo…”

Hello! Today, we'll learn about Direct and Indirect questions in German. It's quite easy.

Direct questions are regular questions like "Wo ist...?" (Where is...?). The verb (ist) comes immediately after the question word (Wo). For instance: "Wo ist die Toilette?"

Indirect questions are part of a larger sentence, often starting with "Ich weiß nicht..." (I don't know...). Here, the verb moves to the very end of the clause. Example: "Ich weiß nicht, wo die Toilette ist." Notice ist is at the end.

Remember this key rule: verb position differs! Direct: verb follows question word. Indirect: verb is at the end.
